Wilma Jewel DeSoto, a beacon of love and service, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025, in Longview, Texas, at the age of 87. Born on June 17, 1937, in Clifton, Texas, Wilma's life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her commitment to her family, and her dedication to her community. Wilma's journey through life was shared with her devoted husband of 65 years, Donald Gene DeSoto, who survives her. Together they built a family that includes their loving son, Donald Gene DeSoto II, and their grandson, Brenton Sharp, with his wife Heather. Wilma was the proud great-grandmother to Jimma and Brentlee, whose lives she filled with joy and wisdom. She will also be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Sandra Stanton, Debra Scheweke, Mary Powell and her husband, Bubba, Elvis Aars and Ronnie Haywood and his wife, Lisa, along with numerous other family members and a host of friends who were all touched by her generous spirit. Wilma was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Shelley Sharp, her son Michael DeSoto, her parents, Clarence and Olga Erickson, and her sister, Catherine Haywood. Wilma's professional life was marked by compassion and advocacy, as she worked for 18 years with the Texas Department of Human Services as a caseworker and supervisor. Following this, she dedicated 15 years to the East Texas Council of Governments as an Ombudsman, serving over 15 counties with her care and expertise. Through these roles, Wilma made a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of children and elderly individuals, providing them with support and guidance. Her academic achievements were notable, graduating with honors and earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from North Texas State University. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Wilma was an avid gardener who loved her rose gardens deeply. Even at the age of 86, she tended to her flowers daily, ensuring they were well-manicured and blooming, reflecting the beauty and care she brought to every aspect of her life. Her role as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was paramount, and she cherished every moment spent with her family. A woman of deep faith, Wilma was a faithful member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She lived her life spreading the word of the Lord and embodying the virtues of her faith in every action. Wilma was known for her adherence to the three "P's": positivity, patience, and prayer, which she imparted to everyone she met. Wilma Jewel DeSoto's legacy is one of unwavering love, remarkable resilience, and a lifetime of service. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her influence will be felt for generations to come. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the world.
