Wilkie Blake Life Story

Wilkie R. “Mickey” Blake, 80, of Jefferson, TX, entered into his eternal home on February 13, 2021. He passed away at Regional Hospital, Longview, Texas, due to complications from various health conditions he had been battling in recent years.

A Louisiana native, Mickey was born August 30, 1940, in Ringgold, Louisiana, where he graduated from high school in 1958. He then obtained his Bachelor of Business degree from Texas A&M in 1968. Mickey and Sue moved their family from Ruston, Louisiana, in 1975 and opened Blake Furniture in September in downtown Longview. He later expanded it into a successful chain of stores throughout East Texas.

Mickey was proud to have served for many years as a deacon at both Harleton Baptist Church and Morton Baptist Church. While at Harleton Baptist, he served as Lay Children’s Church Pastor for some years and coached the RA basketball team. He taught the College and Career Sunday School Class while there and was Chairman of the Deacons for a year. He enjoyed being a member of the Harleton Water Board and participated in many opportunities to serve with Texas Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Team. He traveled to Sri Lanka in January 2005, to help after the 2004 Tsunami.

An avid lover of sports, Mickey enjoyed playing basketball at Ringgold High School where he was a member of the 1957 state championship team and was selected as second team all-state in 1958. He passed along his love of sports to his children and grandchildren by coaching them and following their every event throughout his life. Whether it was baseball, basketball, golf or track, if an event was taking place, Mickey was sure to be there. He, also, enjoyed a lifetime of golfing adventures with his family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman Allen Blake and Emma Ree Hamm Blake; brothers, David Collingsworth, Jack Collingsworth, Jr., Allan Blake, Joe Earl Blake; sister, Clara Blake; and grandson, Colton Hall.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Sue Watts Blake; in-laws, Charles Milton and Marilyn Watts; daughter, Cheryl Hall (Steve); son, Bart Blake; grandchildren, Corey Hall, Jared Blake, Ashlee Blake, and Haley Blake; sisters, Eloise Keith (Bo), Annie Mary Haynie (Jerry); and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Monday, February 22, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Garden Court of Welch Funeral Home. A Life Celebration funeral service will be held at Morton Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Interment will immediately follow in Center Cemetery.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family request with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering c/o Morton Baptist Church, 22177 Highway 154, Diana, Texas 75640
