Violet "Joan" Wogstad, a cherished soul, was called to her eternal home on August 4, 2025. Born on September 22, 1939, in Pacific Junction, Iowa, she lived a faith-filled and loving life that came to a peaceful close in Marshall, Texas. Joan passed suddenly after a long illness, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and kindness that touched everyone she knew.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late Gerald Wogstad, and she basked in the light of her loving family, including her daughter Cynthia W. Smith, her granddaughters Jessica JoAnn Smith and Jennifer Elaine Miller, and her grand son-in-law Brett R. Miller. She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Ora Powles, her brother-in-law Richard Hansen, her niece Heather Lynn, and her son-in-law Michael James Smith. Joan's warmth and guidance will also be deeply missed by her nephews Steven and Stuart Hansen, as well as her sister-in-law Marvel Hansen.
Joan's life was a testament to her Christian faith, which she lived out every day. She graduated from high school and dedicated her life to keeping a wonderful home for her family. Her true passion, however, was oil painting. Joan was an exceptionally talented landscape artist, and her work was a reflection of the beauty she saw in God's creation. She shared her gift generously, teaching painting to all who sought her guidance at Lytle's Frame Shop in Shreveport.
Her interests extended beyond the canvas; Joan was a beacon of creativity and love in her community. She believed in the power of art to transform and uplift the human spirit, a belief she embodied through her patient instruction and the serene beauty of her landscapes. As it is written, "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). Joan's life was indeed a masterpiece, a canvas filled with the vibrant colors of her faith, love, and creativity.
Those who were blessed to know Joan will forever remember her as a woman of great faith and love, especially for the Shih Tzus she gave a loving home to over the years. Her creative spirit was not just evident in her paintings but also in the way she approached life, with an artist's eye for beauty in the everyday. As C.S. Lewis once said, "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." Joan's story was one of continuous growth and grace, and her ending was as beautiful as the life she lived.
Joan's passing is a profound loss to all who knew her, yet her spirit lives on in the memories she leaves behind and the love she shared so freely. She has now joined the heavenly choir and paints in the presence of her Creator, where every sunset and sunrise are as perfect as the ones she captured on her canvas. Joan will be dearly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and bless generations to come.
