Opal Mount Life Story

Opal Mount, age 93, of Longview, Texas, passed away while surrounded by her family's love on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

Opal was born in Bixby, OK, on August 29, 1930, to Charley David Stidman and Lenny Jewel Pritchard Stidman, and was raised as a country girl on a farm in Oklahoma. On April 19, 1947, in Okmulgee, OK, she married the love of her life, J.R. Mount, who preceded her in death in 2010. After the birth of their 2nd child, J.R. and Opal moved to Kilgore, Tx, to raise their growing family. Both J.R. and Opal loved adventures and travelling, so they often took spur of the moment trips where the whole family would pile into the car and drive to random places to explore.

After raising her children, Opal obtained her GED in 1975, and then her LVN license shortly thereafter, fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse. She worked at both hospitals and nursing homes, but her most fulfilling job was working for the WIC program in Tyler, TX, helping mothers and their infants and children.

After both J.R. and Opal retired, they often traveled across the United States still enjoying new adventures. Tales of meeting a bear nose-to-nose and driving over a mountain through a blizzard with no visibility, more than once, are among the favorites she loved to reminisce. Opal continued her adventures with family and friends after her beloved husband passed away, enjoying trips to Turkey, Italy, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii, and was looking forward to more trips. At age 86, she amazed everyone with her adventurous spirit when she rode almost every roller coaster ride while at Disney in Florida.

While she wasn't traveling, Opal enjoyed staying busy with different hobbies. She was often found sewing, quilting, and creating in her craft room. She also loved to garden and plant colorful flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees. In her final days, she was looking forward to learning everything about growing African Violets to add to her garden. She always loved to learn new things and would often search the Internet looking for information.

Opal was also a devout Christian and loved her Lord, Jesus Christ. She faithfully attended church at Calvary Tabernacle in Longview, Tx, and enjoyed visiting the church elderly with her friends. She lived her life as a disciple of Christ and delighted in uplifting her Savior, who she is rejoicing with today.

She is preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Mount, infant daughter, Kathleen Marie Mount, her father and mother, 7 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 great-granddaughter, Brittany Tolliver. She is survived by 1 sister, Ethel Eastridge, 3 sons, Roger Mount, Ronald Mount, and Douglas Mount, 2 daughters, Nancy Still, and Vicki Stanley, 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren adopted by her heart.

A celebration of her life will be held on November 17th, at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Rd, Longview, TX 75605. Visitation will be at 9 AM, and the service will follow at 10 AM. Opal's pastor, Rev. Charles Chargois, will be officiating.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
