Murel Miers Life Story

Murel Lee "Sonny" Miers, Jr. of Longview, TX passed away Dec. 8th, 2024. He was born in Athens, TX Oct. 20th, 1946 and is survived by his wife Sandy of 26 years, 6 children, James Miers and Meredith Stockton, both of Dallas, TX, Mandie & James Covert, of Malakoff, TX, Misty Miers of Colorado Springs, CO, Andre & Kelly Mayeux and Candace & Barry Bradshaw, of Longview, TX, 17 grandchildren, Dylan Miers, Rusty Rogers, McKenzie Rogers, Jayden Manken, Heagen Manken, Colton DeLeon, Ashtyn Stockton, Chance Evans, Raynie Evans, Angelyna Fernandez, Isaac Reyes, Robert Reyes, Riley Reyes, Keeli Zapata, Hannah Bradshaw, Brayden Glasgow, and Connor Mayeux, and 4 great-grandchildren, Adalyn Coleman, Emery Zapata, J.C. Bradshaw, and Elanor Rogers. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Dorothy Depew of Sacramento, CA, Paula Vance of Athens, TX and 1 brother, Wayne Green, also of Athens, TX. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ethel James, his mother, Jane Greene, his aunt, Eula Davis and his beloved brother, Eddie Miers.
He joined the US Navy in 1963 during the Vietnam War, serving 4 ½ years. He trained at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA where he was chosen as Honorman for his company. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Navy Unit Commendation.
After his military service, he returned home and attended Henderson County Jr. College with studies in business and accounting working for Frito Lay for many years as Regional Sales Manager to Senior Key Acct. Manager, developing training programs for management and 7 regional sales managers for 23 warehouses across the region.
He was a man of poetry to his wife, his deepest love. She never knew when or where she would find a letter of poetry written to her, placing it somewhere in their home to be found, expressing his deep love for her.
He loved family gatherings and celebrations with his family, watching his grandchildren grow up all too fast, giving them wisdom and advice. He was their PePaw, often called "Our Old Goat."
One of the things he loved and enjoyed was taking care of his lawn and gardening. He loved watching God's beauty unfold and used that time to spend with the Lord. He was always thanking God for his family and friends, and he never ended a conversation with a family member without saying "I Love You".
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Longview, serving his church in whatever way he could possibly do. But his favorite spot was the church's food pantry. It was somewhat of his little man cave away from home, organizing and praying as he went. Made it clear to us "do not mess with my pantry." He was deeply loved and respected by all and will be truly missed.
Visitation and rosary will be held at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Rd, Longview, TX on Dec. 18th, with visitation from 5-7 with the rosary at 6:00. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Dec. 19th at 11:00 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Longview, TX followed by Inurnment in St. Matthew's Columbian.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the members of St. Matthew Catholic Church, to all our family and friends for their prayers and kindness during this time. Also for all the medical care and support from doctors and staff at Longview Regional Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church or the donor of their choice.
He often said, "Life cannot be life and have true meaning without the Lord."
