Michael L. Deke, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, embarked on his final journey on February 26, 2024, at the age of 66, in Longview, Texas. Born on April 23, 1957, in Newport Beach, California, Mike's life was a testament to the power of faith, love, and laughter.
A proud graduate of Pine Tree High School, Mike's dedication to his country was evident as a prodigious U.S. Navy veteran. His professional life was marked by a 30-year tenure at Sears, where his hard work and commitment were unwavering. Mike's valiant 8-year battle with cancer showcased his indomitable spirit, culminating in a victorious return home to ring his bell in Heaven.
Mike's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. A devout Christian, his love for the Lord shone brilliantly through every action and interaction. As a cherished member of Fellowship Bible Church, he participated in numerous missions with 8 Days of Hope, spreading the word and goodness of God. His small group, the "Old Timers," held a special place in his heart, as they shared in fellowship and friendship that transcended the ordinary.
Mike's legacy is carried on by his adoring daughter, Holly Jones, and her husband, Jeff, who will forever cherish the wisdom and joy he imparted. His sister, Rickey Wilson, brother-in-law, Larry Wilson, and Gary Flory; remember Mike as a beacon of light and strength in their lives. His grandchildren-Jacob, Emily, Ryan, Benny, Lexi, Katie, Krissy, and Laci-were his pride and joy and knew him as their Papa who could spin the most enchanting tales and turn any frown upside down. Mike was a beloved uncle to Ken and Romy Wilson, Christy and Brady Traywick, Josh and Nikki Flory, Sam Flory, Sara and Jason Haddix, and Anna and Chuck Maher. His role as "GUM" (Great Uncle Mike) to Sidney, Ian, Lauren, Claire, Ali, Emma, Ethan, Jeremiah, Ella, Aubrey, Bryson, Landry, Luke, Lindsey, Autumn, Charlie, and London was filled with boundless love and unforgettable memories. Mike now reunites with his late father and mother, Bud and Sally Deke; his sister, Sharon Flory; and brother, Lance Deke; who preceded him in passing and were waiting to greet him at Heaven's gate.
Described as loving, funny, and generous, Mike's life was a masterclass in joy and giving. His laughter was infectious, his generosity knew no bounds, and his love was a warm embrace to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Mike Deke's story is not one of an ending, but a celebration of a life that continues to inspire and uplift everyone he touched. His journey on earth may have concluded, but his spirit marches on, a guiding light for all of us to follow.
