Mary Plemmons Life Story

Mary Louise "Mary Lou" Smith Plemmons passed away Thursday, November 16, 2023 in Marshall, Texas at the age of 95. She was born November 13, 1928 in Vivian, Louisiana to Oliver Britton Smith and Kathleen Dehner Smith.

Mary graduated Valedictorian from Vivian High School at the age of 16, and attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1948 with a degree in chemistry/mathematics. She then trained as a medical technologist at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas where she would meet her future husband, Royce Alan "Buddy" Plemmons. They married February 6, 1953 and settled in Marshall, soon welcoming three children, Mary Patricia Plemmons Rogers (Dave), Royce Britton Plemmons (Ruth Anne) and Margaret Nell Plemmons Shiver (Todd).

Mary was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of Santa Maria. She and Buddy enjoyed traveling abroad and camped all over the United States and Canada, making many wonderful friends along the way. Mary loved to sew and cook and loved camping with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses; six grandchildren, Kyle Rogers of Houston, Courtney Rogers of Dallas, Dr. Britton Plemmons and his wife, Ashli of Longview, Blake Plemmons of Marshall, Grant Shiver and his wife, Dr. Lindsey Shiver of Denver, CO, Reid Shiver and his wife, Ali of Littleton, CO; six great-grandchildren, Jackson, Olivia and Pierce Plemmons, Oliver and Sloane Shiver and Grady Shiver.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mary's devoted caregivers, Cirila, Elenaor, Frances, Eboni, Angela and her nurse LB and the Hospice Plus team.

Visitation for Mary will be held at Sullivan Funeral Home on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 5-7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery immediately following the service where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Pall bearers will be her grandchildren, Kyle Rogers, Courtney Rogers, Dr. Britton Plemmons, Blake Plemmons, Grant Shiver and Reid Shiver. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Newland, Bob Brasch, Jeff Thompson and Tommy Doss.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
