Joyce Allen Hammers, age 75, of Marshall, Texas, beloved mother, grandmother, friend and mentor peacefully passed away on November 19, 2023, into the arms of her loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, following a courageous battle for her health at Select Specialty Hospital in Longview, Texas. Joyce was born on September 30, 1948 in Marshall, Texas to parents Charles and Mary Jane (Foley) Allen. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Jane Allen, and her beloved husband of 48 years, Ronnie Earl Hammers. She is survived by her children, Blake Hammers (Dawn) and Blair Hammers (Melissa); her sister, Kay Downs; her grandchildren, Nathan White (Brooklyn), Remley White, Elijah Hammers and Lyla Allen Hammers; and her great-grandchildren, Haven and Parker White. Joyce is also survived by her nephews, Marcus Downs (Crystal) and Martin Downs (Heather); her great-nephews, Trent Ogle and Mason Downs; her great-niece, Kinley Downs; her bonus grandson, Carlo Celletti as well as many other family members and countless friends. Joyce graduated from Marshall High School in 1967. While in high school, Joyce was part of the Marshall High School Band for four years, during which time she was a twirler for two years and also served as co-drum major and was runner-up to Homecoming Queen. She was a lifelong supporter of the Marshall Mavericks and the ultimate planner and organizer for the Mav-Mixer, which is an annual reunion for MISD graduating classes of 1960-1970. Following graduation from MISD, Joyce attended Stephen F. Austin University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1971. On July 31, 1971, Joyce married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Ronnie Earl Hammers. Together they raised two sons, Blake and Blair, Joyce loved being a wife and mother, but her passions were education and her faith. She taught second grade at Trinity Episcopal School in Marshall for three years, and later in life she also served many years as a member of the school board. Joyce's next adventure as an educator was as Director of the Harrison County Literacy Council. While at HCLC, she had a profound impact on a countless number of individuals by mentoring students from foreign countries, prisons, rehabilitation centers, etc., many of which she remained close with and considered family until her passing. Joyce was a devout Christian and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 50 years, During her time at Trinity, Joyce served on the Altar Guild, Wedding Coordinator (following church protocol) and served on the search committee multiple times; but most famously served as EYC Sponsor...Mary and Earl (if you know, you know). Regardless of church "titles" or "committee", she was very vocal and always made her opinions known. Joyce was a former member of Eta Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She held offices and chaired committees to assist her sorority with community involvement. She had a true love for family, life and adventure. One of her favorite things to do was spend time on Caddo Lake where she loved to boat ride, fish and entertain. She loved to celebrate birthdays and travel with her best friends, affectionately known as "the group"; and Italy held a special place in her heart. But more than anything, Joyce truly loved spending quality time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all those who were blessed by her life and love. Visitation will be held at Sullivan Funeral Home, 100 East Travis Street, Marshall, TX on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 5-7pm.
