Larry "Rick" Sawyer Life Story

Larry Richard "Rick" Sawyer, known affectionately as Rick to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in Hallsville, Texas. Born on the Fourth of July in 1949, in Anderson, South Carolina, Rick's life was a vibrant tapestry of service, family, and heritage that touched many hearts throughout his 76 years. Rick proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for six years, a period of his life that instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and commitment to community. His dedication to service continued long after his military tenure, as he joined his father in the oilfield construction business, where he worked with loyalty and diligence. The call to protect and serve resonated within Rick, leading him to a distinguished career in law enforcement. He upheld the law with integrity as a crime investigator, sergeant, and eventually captain, garnering respect from his colleagues and the community he served. A man of faith, Rick's Christian beliefs were a guiding force in his life. He found solace and fellowship at the River Crossing Cowboy Church until his health no longer allowed him to attend. His spirituality was a quiet cornerstone, reflective of his overall demeanor as a humble and kind-hearted individual. Rick's passion for his Indian heritage was a central part of his identity. He spent countless hours with his children and family, walking the dirt roads in search of Indian artifacts, a testament to his love for history and the natural world. His collection of guns, knives, and particularly arrowheads was not just a hobby but a bridge to his past and a legacy for future generations. Despite his many accomplishments, Rick never sought the spotlight. He was a man who preferred the tranquility of solitude over the bustle of crowds, a gentle presence who found joy in the simple acts of sharing knowledge and creating memories with his loved ones. He was a blessing to many, his kind heart leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to have known him. Rick's memory will be cherished and kept alive by his beloved wife of 25 years, Cathy Lynn Sawyer, and their children, Michelle Broom (Ron Gallegos), Michael Sawyer (Kellie), Amy Knight, Robin Gulotta, and his thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will miss him dearly. His legacy is also celebrated by his sister, Gaynell Jackson (Mike McKenna), his half-sister, Renee Bahamon (Romulo), his half-brother, Joel Burton (Sheri), and numerous family members and close friends whose lives he enriched. Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert Howard and Margaret Betty (Stowe) Sawyer, and his grandparents, whose values and virtues live on through Rick's enduring spirit. Rick Sawyer's life was one of unwavering service, love for his family, and respect for his roots. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy of kindness, humility, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. His journey on this earth has concluded, but the memories he created and the impact he made will resonate for generations to come. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Rick's memory to CurePSP, 325 Hudson Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10013.
