A longtime resident of Marshall, John was a devoted member of the Hallsville church of Christ prior to his illness. He proudly served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Chaffee, and in Germany. One of his most cherished memories from his military service was meeting Elvis Presley while stationed at Fort Hood. John took great pride in his service to his country and was a true patriot.

Before his health declined, John could often be found at his favorite dining spots, including Jucy's, CC's Pizza, and Ryan's or watching a Cowboys game. Having spent many years in California, he developed a love for Hollywood movies, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and a wide array of musicians. His extensive list of favorite songs, singers, movies, and actors remains beloved by multiple generations.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John W. McConnell and Beatrice Hogue McConnell, as well as his sister, Betty Davidson, and brother, Frankie McConnell I. Aunt Grace McConnell Taylor and step daughter Kimberly Hill.
