John Echols Life Story

John David Echols, known affectionately as Dave to his friends and family, passed away on August 1, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 72. Born on August 29, 1952, in Marshall, Texas, Dave was a man of integrity, charisma, and kindness, whose presence brought light and laughter to every room he entered. Dave's early years in Marshall were filled with the joys of childhood and the many accomplishments of youth. He graduated from Marshall Independent High School in 1970, where he shone as a football player and forged lasting friendships. Continuing his education at Texas A&M University, he became a proud alumni of the Class of 1975. His commitment to excellence was evident in his achievement of the Eagle Scout rank, a testament to his leadership and love for the scouting brotherhood. Professionally, Dave was a respected figure in the Oil and Gas Industry, with a career that spanned several decades and continents. As a partner and CEO of Kaldair, and later as a partner with Rotor-Tech, he was known for his innovative thinking and dedication to his work. Dave's entrepreneurial spirit also led him to venture into the hospitality industry with his restaurant, "1852 on Austin," where he took immense pride in his staff, the community he built and the quality of food and the service he provided. Beyond his professional life, Dave's heart was as big as Texas itself. He cherished his family, including his beloved Melinda Allums, who was the love of his life. He is survived by Melinda Allums, his brother, William Terry Echols and his wife Kathryn, his niece Wendy Dickerson and her husband Wes, cousins Dr. John Vassar and his wife Mary Lynn, and Diane Crisp and her husband Norman. His legacy also includes his close friends Denis Michael Morrison, Marty and Dionne Lemoine and their children Anisse and Julien, and his adored fur babies Charlie, Petey, Parker, and Junior. Dave's memory is also honored by numerous other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell Frances and John Talbot Echols, his nephew John Corbit Echols, his aunt Sylvia Vassar McGeorge, and his grandparents John Silvey and Annie Ella Echols, and Serena Ann Green. Dave's love for animals was unparalleled, and his support for the SPCA was a testament to his compassionate spirit. Music was another of Dave's passions, and he lived his life with a song in his heart, often sharing his love for melodies with those around him. A man of faith, Dave loved the Lord and lived his life in a way that reflected his beliefs. John David Echols will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and gave generously. His legacy of kindness, mentorship, and genuine care for others will continue to inspire all who knew him. Dave's life was a melody of joy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the things he held dear. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. In honor of Dave's love for animals, the family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to your local SPCA.
