Jimmy Ponder Life Story

Jimmy Dee Ponder, Sr., affectionately known as Jimmy to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Born on December 12, 1942, in Archibald, Louisiana, Jimmy's journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit, his infectious humor, and his remarkable handiness.

He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Doris Ponder, brothers Johnny Ponder, Douglas Ponder, Billy Ponder and sister Willie Boyer. A true family man, Jimmy is survived by his devoted wife, Glenda Ponder, and his loving sister, Joy Storey. He was a cherished father to Dee Ponder and his wife Lisa, Kevin Ponder and his wife Karen, Matt Ponder and his wife Leslie, Barry Childers and his wife Becky, and his daughter Alisia Mullikin and her husband Rokky. Jimmy's (Poppy) legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren: Colten Ponder and his wife Marlee, Garrett Ponder and his wife Jessica, Colby Ponder and his wife Abby, Samuel Ponder, Ben Ponder, Zachry Ponder, Morgan Darby and her husband Drew, Mason Mullikin and his wife Kelly, and M'Lyn Valdez and her husband Justin and 2 great grandchildren, Porter Ponder due in March of this year and Gemma Darby. He also leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews who refer to him as "Uncle Big" and fondly remember their uncle's vibrant stories and laughter.

Jimmy's formative years were spent at Mangham High School in Mangham, Louisiana, where he graduated before continuing his education at Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, Louisiana. His professional life was characterized by dedicated service to Alcoa and General Motors, where he made countless contributions and formed lifelong friendships. Beyond his work, Jimmy was deeply involved in his community. He served on the Waskom Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors, was a member of the Waskom School Board, a passionate President of the Waskom Little League, and an active member of the Waskom Athletic Booster Club. His commitment to these roles exemplified his spirit of service and his dedication to improving the lives of those around him.

Jimmy had a passion for life that was evident in everything he did. He loved playing softball, where he was a valued teammate on multiple teams. His love for the outdoors was seen in his enthusiasm for hunting and fishing. Jimmy was also a master of woodworking, creating beautiful pieces that reflected his skill and attention to detail. Known for his exceptional coaching from the comfort of his recliner, Jimmy's humor and spirited nature made him the best at offering advice and encouragement during any game. His family and friends will remember him as the man who could fix anything, always ready with a tool in hand and a joke on his lips.

Those who knew Jimmy were touched by his funny and spirited personality. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his presence and leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. Jimmy's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the countless memories he created with those who were fortunate enough to cross his path.

As we say farewell to Jimmy Dee Ponder, Sr., we reflect on a life well-lived, a life filled with joy, hard work, and meaningful connections. His impact on his family, friends, and community will endure, and his memory will be treasured forever in the hearts of those who loved him. Jimmy's journey on earth may have come to a close, but the stories of his life will continue to inspire and bring smiles to the faces of all who remember him.

Jimmy's life will be celebrated by his family and friends on Friday, January 12, 2024. A time of visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church Waskom, TX. He will be laid to rest at Colonial Gardens in Marshall, TX following the service. Serving as pallbearers are Colby Ponder, Garrett Ponder, Colten Ponder, Mason Mullikin, Justin Valdez, Drew Darby, and Rokky Mullikin.

As the sun sets on a life so vibrantly lived, we take comfort in knowing that Jimmy's spirit will continue to guide and uplift us, just as it always has.
