Jeannie K. Armstrong would tell you that she had the most wonderful 77-year life. And on June 6, 2025, following a brief illness, she passed from Longview, TX to her new home in heaven to which she had always looked forward.
Jean, as she was known by most, was a uniquely positive experience for anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her earthly journey was marked by compassion and consideration for others and an unwavering faith in the Lord.
We should remember her not for the way that life ended, but for the way it was lived and the great impact that it had on others. She would not expect us to mourn her loss, but rather to fondly remember and celebrate all the good times. She always had a great story to tell.
Jean was born in Tyler, TX, the middle child in a family of 3 siblings, the children of Thomas and Estelline Korkmas who predeceased her.
She was active in high school activities and organizations including the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Following graduation and some courses at Kilgore College, at age 18 she was hired by the Social Security Administration. She spent the next 34 years there earning many awards and including 6 years traveling to various states as an expert Medicare Advisor. Even after retiring from the Social Security Administration, she continued to help many people navigate the system.
Outside of her career, Jean volunteered at several charitable organizations and served many shut-ins and others – ANYONE who needed help. She also enjoyed many activities, hobbies.
Although Jean enjoyed the modern conveniences and technology, her preferred lifestyle would have been fully appropriate over a century ago. Together with family, she loved to camp out, fish and hunt, maintained a vegetable garden, numerous flowers beds and even raised a few chickens.
Each year she canned dozens of jars of meat and vegetables, which along with fresh eggs, she shared with friends and neighbors. She was recently preparing to teach a canning class for all interested.
With 10-12 antique and modern sewing machines and a serger, she enjoyed making various items for family and friends. And her extensive collection of kerosene lamps was phenomenal.
Jean is survived by Tom, her husband of over 55 years, their son James and their granddaughter Breanna. Also, her brothers Larry (with wife Carolyn) in Belton, TX and Pat (with wife Chelsea) in Tyler, TX. Many others will also miss her dearly, especially her close friends Linda, Della, Jonette, Glenda and Nick.
There is an old saying that “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Jean knew ! Jean cared !
In accordance with her longtime wishes, her body will be cremated with the ashes being spread across the water. She wanted that one last time at a private fishin’ hole. In addition, a Visitation at 1:00 p.m. and Memorial service at 2:00 p.m. will be held in the Perkins Chapel at Woodland Hills Baptist Church, 2105 E. Loop 281, Longview, TX on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations you desire to Woodland Hills Baptist Church and their many missions.
