James Walter Vickery

James Walter Vickery left this world for his heavenly home May 24, 2020. James was born in Dallas, TX on June 23, 1931 to James C. Vickery and Thelma Vickery. He was the oldest of 8 children.
A lifetime resident of Longview, James served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. James worked for L.E. Myers for a short time before being employed to SWEPCO where he worked for more than 40 years.
James is preceded in death by his loving wife, Velma Vickery; son, Preston Vickery; step-daughter, Ruedean Burk; his mother and father, four sisters and two brothers.
Surviving James are his son, Jeffery Vickery of Longview, daughter, Cindy Dorgan and husband Tommy, of Hallsville, and step-son Roy Shipman and wife, Pat, of Longview; two grandsons, James Dorgan of Hallsville and Josh Dorgan of Beebe, Arkansas; and brother, David Vickery of Longview. He is also survived by son-in-law, Vernon Burk, grandchildren Thomas Burk of Longview, Rachel Roden of Longview, Rebekah Lunquist of North Carolina, Ruth Glass of Longview, and Rhoda Cerliano of Gilmer; 27 great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.
James was a member of Valley View Baptist Church in Longview. Before he began his residency at Whispering Pines nursing home, he enjoyed fishing and traveling. More recently, he passed his days playing dominos and BINGO, watching his westerns, and listening to music performed by visiting musicians.
The family will receive friends for a personalized visitation on Thursday, May 28, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Garden Court of Welch Funeral Home. A Life Celebration funeral service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Welch Funeral Home. The service will also be stream live at www.facebook.com/welchlivestream
