James Theodore McDaniel, Jr. known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away on April 14, 2025, in Marshall, Texas, at the age of 88. Born on August 16, 1936, in Davie County, North Carolina, Jim led a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his community. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty McDaniel; his parents, James Theodore McDaniel Sr. and Rebecca Beck McDaniel; his brothers, Thomas and Terry McDaniel; and his sister, Patsy McDaniel, Jim leaves behind a legacy of love and perseverance. He is survived by his devoted children, Marti Stephens and her husband Shannon, and his son, who was also his best friend, Jimmy "Moose" McDaniel. His grandchildren, Amanda Holt, Jaime Osburn and her husband Eric, and Ashley White and her husband Dillon, will miss his wisdom and gentle spirit. Jim will also be fondly remembered by his sister Wanda Whitley, his eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. His loyal four-legged companions, Sadie Mae, Little Bit, and Miss Kitty, will miss his caring presence. Jim's service to his country was a source of great pride for him. He served with honor in the U.S. Army before dedicating an additional 21 years to the U.S. Navy. Following his retirement from the military, he continued to serve his community as a Foreman for the Harrison County Road and Bridge Department in Precinct 4, where he retired after more than two decades of faithful service. Jim's commitment to his fellow citizens was further exemplified by his active membership in the Marshall Masonic Lodge #22. His interests were as varied as they were joyful. Jim cherished the times spent with his son, sharing in all of his endeavors. He was a familiar face at the lake, always questioning why they were the last to leave, yet savoring every moment. His passion for dirt races, napping, and joining in wherever fun was unfolding, made him a beloved figure in his community. Jim's friendships extended to all of Jimmy's friends, who were considered friends of his own as well. A group of men, including Jim, held a sacred tradition of meeting every Wednesday at the Life Center. When it closed, they adapted by moving their gatherings to Earl Warbington's home, where they continued to share coffee and camaraderie. Jim also volunteered at Mission Marshall, helping to unload supplies and food, and enjoying the simple pleasure of conversation with people from all walks of life. Jim's life was a testament to the power of showing up - for his country, his work, his Masonic brothers, and most importantly, for his family. His gentle demeanor, unwavering integrity, and the warmth of his smile will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to James Theodore McDaniel, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and kindness. His memory will continue to inspire those he leaves behind, and his spirit will remain a guiding light for his family and the many lives he touched. Jim's journey through life was marked by the love he gave and the strength he showed, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones and the community he held so dear.
