Henry McKay Life Story

Henry Herbert McKay, 92, passed away on December 19, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones, in Gilmer, Texas.

Herbert was born on November 30, 1928 in Ringling Oklahoma, to Olin and Mellie McKay.  After retirement, he and his wife, Gearldine, retired to their small farm in Gilmer, Texas, and enjoyed staying active taking care of things on the farm.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gearldine McKay; 2 daughters, Deena McKay and Adriane Longoria and spouse, both of Arlington, Texas; 3 sons, Henry McKay, Jr. and Timothy McKay of Gilmer, Texas, and Bruce McKay and partner of Spencer, North Carolina.  Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Norman McKay.  Herbert was blessed with 7 grandchildren, spouses and 14 great grandchildren.

Herbert was drafted into the military, Army branch, and served in the Korean War as a Sergeant training in the truck driving division.  He married Gearldine Hollingsworth in 1954, and they recently celebrated 66 years of marriage.  Herbert retired from General Motors, after being honorably discharged from the Army, in Arlington, Texas. He and Gearldine then retired to Gilmer, Texas, where they have spent the last 27 years.

Herbert loved spending time with family, working on the family farm, and finding odd and end jobs to keep himself busy.  He loved taking family road trips, and would make plans for a stop along the way at any Casino that might be on the route.  In his final days, Herbert could be heard singing Amazing Grace.  He celebrated each and every day, and will be missed by many.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
