Harold Stone Life Story

Harold Wayne Stone, age 88, of Longview, Texas passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022. He was born on April 24, 1934 in the community of Judson to E.E. “Elmer” Stone and Blanche Iola (Mattox) Stone. He was a 1953 graduate of Judson Grove High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. Harold had a distinguished career that spanned 38 years, with Southwestern Bell Company, where he was recognized for 34 years of perfect attendance.
Harold Wayne accepted Christ at the age of 12 at the First Baptist Church of Judson, he was ordained as a Deacon, and served at First Baptist Church of Judson, Liberty Baptist Church, and was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Longview. He especially enjoyed the Men’s Sunday School class.
Harold Wayne was married to the love of his life, Wanda “Susie” Marie Bryant for more than 64 years. They are the proud parents of two sons, Harold, Jr. “Bubba” and Jason Mattox. Harold Wayne’s greatest joy was his family, especially his three grandsons, Tyler, Tanner, and Talan. Harold Wayne loved farming. It was a normal occurrence to find him out in the pasture on his tractor, feeding his cattle, baling hay, or mending fences. He also had a love for history, collecting, and antiquing.
Harold Wayne was a life-long advocate for agriculture. He was a charter member of the Gregg County Farm Bureau, where he was the longest serving member of the county board. The Texas Farm Bureau recognized his service by awarding him the 2020 Pioneer Award. He was the former president of the Oil Belt Farm and Ranch Club, and a lifetime member of the Upshur-Gregg Soil & Water Conservation Board. He made numerous trips to Austin and Washington, DC to visit with state and national leaders regarding agricultural issues.
Harold was the youngest of 6 children, he was preceded in death by his parents, by his brothers, Gerald, Eugene, Robert, and sisters, Nellie and Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife, Wanda “Susie” Marie Bryant Stone; His sons Harold Wayne “Bubba” Stone, Jr (Dara), and Jason Mattox Stone; His grandsons, Tyler Brinkman Stone, Tanner Bryant Stone, and Talan Mattox Stone; and his faithful companion Scooter. He was loved by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in law, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road, Longview. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 15, 2022 in the Cammack Family Chapel of Welch Funeral Home.
