Ben Charles Brooks, affectionately known as Ben, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at the age of 93, surrounded by the love of his family in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. Born on August 1, 1930, in the same close-knit community, Ben's life was characterized by dedication to his family, his work, and his many interests. Ben's journey began as the cherished son of Ben and Martha Brooks and grew to include a beautiful, sprawling family. He was the devoted husband of Mattie Lou Brooks for an admirable 71 years, a loving father to his children, Linda Sheneman (Bruce), David Brooks (Jeannie), Debbie Deen, and Tommy Brooks (Roni Watson), and a doting grandfather to Jeff and Amy Sheneman, Leigh and Gretchen Sheneman, Amy and Jacob Yarbrough, Robert and Courtney Brooks, Kenny and Shannon McFarland, Kevin McFarland, and great-grandfather to Brandon Sheneman, Sydney Sheneman, Emma Sheneman, Kinsley Gaston, Mason McFarland and Dylan McFarland, Chanley McFarland, Braelin Brooks , Kevin James McFarland and one great-great-granddaughter, Teagan McFarland. Ben also leaves behind his sister, Martha Wynn, brother-in-law, George Livers, and numerous other beloved family members. His parents, two sisters, Margie Whitehurst and Doris Livers, preceded him in death. After graduating high school, Ben furthered his education at Tyler Jr. College, which set the stage for a successful career as an electrician. His talents and work ethic were evident early on when he joined Electrical Local Union #324 at the young age of 23. Ben's career spanned several decades, including over 20 years at Thiokol, time at Alcoa, and concluding with his retirement from General Motors in 1996. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his commitment to his family. Ben's interests were as varied as they were passionate. An avid Ham Radio Operator, he connected with people around the world, sharing stories and forging friendships. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for hunting and the countless hours he spent on his tractor, tending to the family farm. Yet, it was the time spent with his family that Ben cherished most, especially the holiday dinners that his wife Mattie always made so special. A man of great faith and community spirit, Ben was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge #22 in Marshall, Texas. His fellow Masons recently honored him with a 50-year pin, a testament to his dedication and service. Ben's influence extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of many in his community with his generosity and kindness. Ben Brooks was a pillar of strength, a source of wisdom, and a beacon of love to all who knew him. His legacy is one of unwavering love for his family, steadfast commitment to his work, and a life well-lived in service to others. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains a guiding light for his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to Ben, we take comfort in knowing that his life was full, his heart was content, and his impact was profound. His memory will forever be cherished and celebrated by those who loved him. Ben Charles Brooks was, indeed, a blessing to us all. He will be deeply missed, but his lessons of love, hard work, and family values will live on for generations to come. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Ben's memory to The Shriner's Children's Hospital or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
