Grieving Alone: Activities That Can Help

by Welch Funeral Home

While it’s nice to have the love of others surrounding you in a time of grief, that may not always available. It may be that you live far from other family members, just moved to a new place where you haven’t established a good network of friends, or perhaps it is due to restrictions from Covid. In any case, directors of funeral homes in Hallsville, TX. want you to know there are things you can do alone that can help you work through this difficult time.

Go For a Walk

One of the most simple things you can do is go for a walk. The act of walking has been shown to open blood vessels, provide more oxygen to your brain and body, and lift your spirits overall. It also gets you out of the house and back into the world around you. The great thing about taking a walk is that it is easy, free, and you can do it anywhere. All you need is a pair oof shoes and a direction to go.

Start a Hobby

Hobbies can be great stress relivers and give your brain a break from feeling grief as you focus on the task at hand. Whether you choose painting, woodworking, arts and crafts, gardening, or cooking, these activities can be a much needed release and allow you put your energy into creating something new.

Write Your Loved One a Letter

Sitting down with a pen and paper and writing a letter to your loved one can do wonders for your mental health. Putting the words that you wish to say to your loved one down on paper can help you feel connected to them as well as provide closure. The letter could be things you never said to your loved one but wanted to, or you could write about a favorite memory of them, or how you are doing since they have passed. Don’t get too caught up in having to write the “right thing”, just let your heart be your guide.

Clean and Organize Your Home

If you are looking for a distraction, try deep cleaning and organizing your home. When you are preforming these tasks, your mind will have a chance to focus on something other than the sense of loss you are feeling. Not only that but having a home that is clean, organized, and clutter free creates a nicer, more calm and soothing environment which can boost your mental health.

Spend Time in Your Garden (or Start One)

Spending time pulling weeds and planting flowers can do great things for your mood. If you have a garden make time to tend to it. If you don’t currently have a garden, start one. It could be in an area outside your home, or if you don’t have any green space, create a mini garden inside by utilizing window sills and other sunny areas.

While all of these from directors of funeral homes in Hallsville, TX. are great, if you feel like you need more help working through your grief, always reach out to a friend or a grief professional.
