Corinne Young Life Story


Corinne Cherry Young, 90 of Suffolk, Virginia, formerly of Tatum, Texas went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 14, 2018. Corinne was born on April 30, 1928 to Gil and Janie Kuykendall Cherry. A child of the Great Depression, Corinne enjoyed simple pleasures but was already displaying her love of adventure by her early teen years. One of her greatest thrills was racing tractors in open fields alongside her friends.

Corinne graduated from Tatum High School in 1944. She received her undergraduate degree from East Texas Baptist College in 1948 and Masters degree in government from Stephen F. Austin University.

She married James K. Young in 1951. They were married 58 years until Mr. Young’s death in 2009.

Corinne devoted 50 years of her life to the students of Tatum High School when she taught history, government and economics. She was a mentor, inspiration and friend. The lives of her students serve as a living example of her love and dedication. After retirement Corinne served on the Tatum School Board for ten years.

Corinne was an avid world traveler. She believed that travel was one of the very best forms of education. One of her favorite expressions was, “Let’s go make a memory.” Corinne’s last great adventure was leaving her beloved Texas and moving to Virginia to be closer to her family. It was a wonderful season of life filled with new friends and experiences, the closeness of family and visits from Texas friends. She lived a remarkable life filled with with God’s amazing grace. Her smile, love, laughter, spirit and wit never wavered.

Corinne was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Young, parents Gil and Janie Cherry, brother F.G. Cherry and sisters Christine Mikell and Anna Enloe. She leaves behind her loving family, daughter Catherine (Neal) Johnson, granddaughters Angela (Jake) Waymire and Alexandra Johnson, great grandchildren Mason and Amelia Waymire.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation at First Baptist Church, Tatum on Thursday, October 18 at 1:00 pm with a Life Celebration service to be held at 2:00 pm with interment to immediately follow at in Tatum Cemetery.

Memorial donations in memory of Corinne may be made to First Baptist Church, Tatum or the Tatum Ex-Student’s Association Scholarship Fund in memory of Corinne Young.
